I came across this while doing a bit of research for my novel, on the internet, naturellement…
Apparently a really old woman in Tbilisi, Georgia was digging around looking for scrap copper wire to sell when a slip of the spade instead hit a fiber-optic cable. And just like that all of neighboring Armenia, as in the whole country of Armenia (as well as large parts of her native Georgia and Azerbaijan) were without internet for five long hours. Yep. No joke. No youtube, no facebook, ничего, nitchevo.
Web users in the nation of 3.2 million people were left twiddling their thumbs […] Television pictures showed reporters at a news agency in the capital Yerevan staring glumly at blank screens.
An inadvertent poke and voila, life stops. Because of a little old woman digging in the dirt. And we worry about hackers?
